Nowadays, there are two Mojacars, the historic village on the mountain top and the modern holiday resort stretching along several miles of sandy beach....known as the Playa.

Mojacar is a unique region of Spain, an ancient city of Arabs, tracing its history back to Phoenician times.

Today it is a collection of white washed cubic houses perched on the foothills of the Sierra Cabrera Mountains, overlooking the shimmering Mediterranean sea below.

You will find Mojacar on the South East coast of Spain, where the Costa Blanca meets the Costa del Sol, in the Province of Almeria. The area is the ideal holiday location, with an average of 320 sunny days each year and miles of unspoilt coastline.

This is a very special part of Spain, few high rise buildings, constant sun day after day, long lazy evenings by the crystal seas and desert hills closing you off from the hustle and bustle of the modern world beyond.

Few that visit Mojacar fail to return, which would seem to prove the legend of the "Indalo Man", seen on gateways and entrances all over Mojacar.

The symbol was the subject of cave paintings found in the region. The most popular interpretation is that it represents a God holding a rainbow above his head to ward off evil spirits.

Mojacar Village

An intricate maze of winding cobbled streets, where the visitor may wander as if in times past, remote from the hubbub of the motor car. The quaint twisting streets are lined with tiny shops and intimate bars here and there leading onto tree shaded squares where you may rest and take much welcomed refreshment.

There is an abundance of historic features, old arches, ancient houses stacked one above another, fresh water springs providing washing and watering sites, the Alcazaba Fortress - today rebuilt as the village church.
History abounds from every corner, as does a warm welcome.

At night, Mojacar is transformed into a gourmets paradise, a multitude of restaurants opening their doors to offer traditional Spanish cuisine, Seafood and Shellfish specialities as well as English, Indian, Cantonese, French and Indonesian.

The village comes alive with colourful places and colourful people.

Mojacar Playa

The descent from the village to the beach is a move from Medieval to modern times.

The Playa consists of many miles of sun drenched sand, from the wide northern beaches of Puerto Rey - where the beautiful Naturist Zone may be encountered, to the southern more isolated rocky coves known as Treasure Bay - a great fishing area.

A central beachside strip, some two miles in length overlooked by the village, provides the centre of daytime activity. Here are located the many beach bars, situated right on the beach, providing sun-beds, palm shades, cold drinks, warm company, good food and music. All these at modest prices that make relaxing here a pleasant change from the other higher priced Costas.

On hand is the ever present Mediterranean, warm, safe and crystal clear.

You can swim, scuba drive, wind-surf, water-ski, jet ski, dinghy sail or just relax and watch.
